Elsa's Story...
Elsa is in her late 60s and is living with dementia. Family occasions are increasingly difficult for Elsa and her family.
She struggles to remember who they are and all of the family times they have spent together. She spends her days wandering the corridors of her care home, often found anxiously searching for things she feels she has lost, disorientated and confused, holding on to care staff and following them around the home.
In the care home’s regular music therapy groups Elsa has found a space where she can sing with joy, sometimes getting up to tap dance and exuberantly perform music that takes her back to her youth. Elsa’s enthusiasm and energy is infectious, sparking ripples of musical activity around the group. After one session she turned to the music therapist and said “I’m glad you’ve got this on record. This is what I like doing - it’s what I do, it’s who I am!”
For Elsa and her family, music therapy offers a space where she can become the person she used to be.
