Elsa
Elsa was in her late 60s. Living with dementia, she spent a lot of her days wandering the corridors and rooms of the care home where she lived, anxiously searching for things she felt she had lost. Disorientated and confused, she held on to care staff and followed them around the home.
But drawn to the music therapy groups which took place regularly in the care home, Elsa found a space where she could sing with joy and concentration, sometimes getting up to tap dance and exuberantly perform music that took her straight back to her youth. The other residents would watch appreciatively and Elsa’s enthusiasm and energy was infectious, often sparking ripples of musical activity around the group. After one particularly good session she turned to the music therapist and said, “I’m glad you’ve got this on record. This is what I like doing – it’s what I do!”
For Elsa, music therapy offered a space where she could become the person she used to be.
