Improvisation and Keyboard Harmony – a creative approach
Level 1 - course summary
- Provides basic knowledge of and experience in improvisation techniques and skills that can be used on a variety of instruments as well as voice
- Provides a basic facility in keyboard harmony
- Develops awareness and listening in making music together.
Level 2 - course summary
- Builds on the Level 1 course
- Further approaches to structured and free improvisation
- More advanced keyboard chords/voicings, basic modulation and transposition skills
- Applying the above to idiomatic improvisational styles.
Participants on the Level 2 course should have completed Level 1, or have a good knowledge of basic chord voicings (I, IV and V) and inversions as well as reasonable fluency on their first instrument (or voice) and keyboard, and some previous experience of improvisation.
Who should attend?
- Anyone wanting to develop their confidence and skills in improvisation, particularly at the keyboard
- People interested in training as music therapists who need to improve their improvisation and keyboard skills
This course does NOT guarantee a place on a music therapy training programme.
Entry requirements
- A high level of skill on one musical instrument (not necessarily the piano)
- Keyboard facility
- Fluency in spoken English
Course duration
A weekly 2-hour evening session for ten weeks.
