Mary Hare Schools, Newbury

A purpose-built music therapy Unit has just been built as part of the new Arts Centre at Mary Hare School for deaf children. This new music therapy unit will be a base for a team of music therapists, headed by Christine Rocca, and marks the development of a music therapy service for the local community, although there has been music therapy at Mary Hare School for deaf children – aged 6 months to 18 years – for many years.

Christine Rocca and Cathy Bowker do other outreach work, including with groups of children with cochlear implants and visual aids – increasing the children’s speech development through expressive singing, as well as giving them greater confidence. They also give workshops and presentations to other professionals. Private and professional referrals are welcome.

Corrina Lodge Care Home, Camberley, Surrey

Corrina Lodge is a Barchester Care Home offering residential care for older people living with dementia, and for younger people with neurological disabilities.

Music therapist Sylvia Raine works mainly with people living with neurological disabilities. The work aims to create opportunities for people to participate in the communal life of the home.

Castle Special School, Newbury

The music therapy at Castle Special School has helped very volatile autistic children and teenagers to become calmer and more open to new experiences.

One boy spoke his first word in music therapy, and then began to reveal more of his personality, previously hidden behind an impassive mask. A class teacher said:

“Music provides a stimulus and motivates our pupils to become more aware, alert, active and to anticipate, respond and express their feelings.”

Platts House, Newbury

Platts House is a transitional unit for young adults aged 16-18 who have multiple disabilities.

The music therapy programme at Platts House focuses on teaching life skills as the students here are between leaving school and moving into society.

Music therapy plays an important role in the programme, particularly enhancing social and communication skills.

Outreach in Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Hampshire

Christine Rocca and Cathy Bowker work extensively with groups of children with autism and deafness, their families and carers.

Headway Thames Valley, Henley

In 2003 the Friends of Henley Festival Society approached Nordoff-Robbins Outreach about setting up a music therapy project in Henley-upon-Thames. In 2004 music therapy began in Headway Thames Valley, Henley – a resource centre for people with a brain injury and their families and carers.

Sharon Warnes works here for one day a week providing music therapy, starting in September 2007.
