South West

The following Nordoff Robbins services are running in the South West area. For more information please contact Rachel Millman, Head Music Therapist.

The Manor Care Home, Taunton

The Manor is a Barchester Care Home providing nursing services for older people and younger people with neurological disabilities, as well as respite care. Jane Gibson has been working here one day a week since summer of 2005, providing music therapy sessions for both individuals and groups of residents. The groups include a hand bell group and an open singing group.

Lucerne House Care Centre, Exeter

Jane Gibson is also providing music therapy here, two days per week, as part of the Barchester Nordoff Robbins Initiative, working with older people with dementia. Individual, small group sessions and sessions for residents and their families take place.

Hannah Levy House, Bournemouth

Alison Hornblower works within this residential care home with older people with dementia and neurological disorders. Residents attend individual music therapy sessions and there is also a weekly group. Alison also runs a regular open music group in the resident’s lounge, which staff and family are encouraged to attend.

Kings Park Community Hospital, Bournemouth

Rachel Millman works here with people with moderate to severe dementia one day per week. The work is supported by the Kings Park Hospital Friends.

Group music therapy sessions are run jointly with hospital staff and one to one sessions are also offered.  Rachel works across the 3 wards at the hospital on rotation, so each ward receives a 3 month block of music therapy sessions.  Staff are then supported to use music activities in between these periods of music therapy.

After a group session a member of staff from the hospital recently commented: “watching music overcome so many barriers was a delight and at times very emotional…”

Bournemouth Arts Development/ Poole Arts Development / Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra

In the South West we are also developing arts and health projects for people with dementia in conjunction with Bournemouth Borough Council Arts Development, Poole Arts Development and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Rachel Millman and the BSO’s Music Animateur are running workshops at Kings Park Hospital and Alderney Hospital.

Sea View Centre, Poole

Sea View is a vibrant and busy day centre that provides leisure and learning opportunities for adults with learning disabilities. Alison Hornblower has been working here since September 2007 and provides a range of music therapy work including one to one sessions, closed groups and a joint open music session which is run with a member of staff who is also a music specialist.  Alison works closely with the Intensive Sensory Interaction team at Sea View and has hosted Soundbeam workshops.

In addition, service users, Sea View Centre staff, and pupils from Parkstone Grammar School have been working with Alison on a musical project this year. This culminated in a show at the Centre in June 2009.

Coda Music Centre, Highcliffe

We are now providing a consultancy/management service to the Music Therapy team at the Coda Music Centre in Highcliffe Dorset. N-R South West are providing supervision as well as managerial support with service development and recruitment.

Shelley Park Neuro Care Centre, Bournemouth

Shelley Park is an expanding neuro care centre providing neuro- rehabilitation and neuro-palliative care for younger adults with long term neurological conditions resulting from injury or disease.  Rachel Millman works here as part of the multidisciplinary team which delivers individualised person centred care. Group and individual music therapy takes place in the multi-sensory room, or by the bedside, and Rachel also supports visiting musicians who visit every few months to deliver workshops.

Beaucroft Foundation School, Wimborne

Starting in September ’09 Alison Hornblower will be setting up music therapy provision at this school, in conjunction with the staff. Beaucroft Foundation School caters for children aged 4 – 16 who are experiencing learning difficulties, including complex needs and those with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

Regional Workshops

Over the past year we have been providing ‘one off’ sessions and music workshops locally. These have included workshops for Poole Arts Development and East Dorset County Council on their Short Breaks initiative (inclusive activities for children with additional needs); sessions for Poole College Choices for Adults and taster sessions at Brook View Nursing Home, West Moors.
