Project 4
Outreach Research Project: collaboration between Nordoff Robbins, St Cuthbert with St Matthias CE Primary School & the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea LEA. (2002-3)
Title: Music therapy for inclusion of students with special educational needs in mainstream primary education: an evaluation of a pilot project.
Principal Investigator: Simon Procter
Research Team: Simon Procter & Harriet Crawford
Project Outline: Nordoff Robbins was approached by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea who wished to set up a pilot project to evaluate the use of music therapy for inclusion of pupils with SEN statements in mainstream primary education. Nordoff Robbins was asked to provide music therapy services for a short-term project in this relatively new area of activity. The project was time-limited and designed also to indicate the possibilities for further work in this area, through a project evaluation, using a qualitative perspective.
Presentations:
- April 2004 – presentation to the school on the project (HC)
- October 2004 – presentation at the Nordoff-Robbins Day Conference on Music Therapy & Educational Inclusion.
Outcomes:
This piece of small-scale research was able to demonstrate benefits of music therapy for excluded children in a mainstream school, which led to renewed funding for this work the following year.
