Research Education

The Research Department is responsible for developing the research community of students on the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy research degree programme; supporting the work of Nordoff-Robbins colleagues registered on other programmes at doctoral level; and providing research training and support for the two Nordoff-Robbins Masters programmes.

Nordoff-Robbins Research Degree (MPhil/PhD in Music Therapy) Programme

The Nordoff-Robbins/City University MPhil/PhD Research Degree Programme was launched in 2005. This is the first PhD programme in music therapy in the UK and offers places for up to six students working at doctoral level, on a competitive basis.

For further information on the programme see MPhil/PhD Programme.

Support for Nordoff-Robbins staff working on doctoral projects

Nordoff-Robbins The Research Department also supports in various ways staff who are closely associated with the research community of the organisation, but who are formally registered at other universities.

Simon Procter (Research Associate) is registered as a doctoral candidate at the University of Exeter under the supervision of music sociologist Professor Tia DeNora.

The Research Department provides research teaching for doctoral candidates registered on the Nordoff-Robbins MPhil/PhD programme, linked to one-day research symposium seminars and events (see Research Resources and support). These seminars are part of the department’s commitment to generating a community of inquiry in Nordoff-Robbins at advanced research level.
