Musical Resources for Music Therapy 1 & 2
Course Leaders: Rachel Verney and Donald Wetherick

Clinical improvisation is an endlessly fascinating field. It is also vulnerable to the demands of continuing clinical work. Whether you are eager to develop your skills further or feel in need of refreshment, these workshops aim to help you continue your self-development for music therapy work.

Workshop 1 explores clinical improvisation from ‘first principles’. It looks at the experience of ‘being in music’, analysis of clinical work through audio/video recordings, and refining musical-clinical skills through practical exercises, focusing on the experience of the client in improvisation. Piano, guitar and other instruments are used and participants are encouraged to bring other instruments they use in their work.

Workshop 2 is for those who have attended a Level 1 workshop before and is a forum to continue developing clinical improvisation skills through sharing audio/video material and practising improvisational approaches. Work on musical idioms and techniques will be included, depending on participant’s interests.

Music Therapy with Older People
Course Leader: Harriet Powell

This workshop looks at the particular challenges of music therapy with older people, including those affected by dementia. It covers setting up and running individual and group sessions, including open groups, and working with staff and carers. It is particularly aimed at music therapists new to this area of work or planning to enter the field.

Improvisation Evenings
Course Leader: to be announced

These evenings are an opportunity for music therapists to explore improvising outside their clinical work, whether for professional interest, self-development or just for fun. They will be hosted by a Nordoff Robbins music therapist, with guided improvisation for the first part of the evening followed by an open/free improvisation session. A wide range of percussion instruments and two pianos will be available. Participants are welcome to bring their own instruments too.

Returning to Practice/EU Registration
Course Leaders: Various tutors

This course aims to help music therapists who have been out of practice for more than 2 years or who are applying to register as a music therapist from the European Union to meet HPC requirements, including Updating Knowledge and Skills and/or a Period of Adaptation. It includes 3 meetings with an experienced mentor and help with clinical placements (where available), clinical supervision, music skills teaching and/or theoretical study. It does not replace the HPC’s Registration Assessment process but offers guidance and support.
