An Introduction to Music Technology in Music Therapy
Course Leader: Ray Travasso

Music technology is constantly evolving and there are many products available. It is often difficult to know which applications are the most suitable. This programme introduces the benefits of various music technology applications in clinical work and in the analysis, presentation and accessibility of music therapy. It includes case material, experiential workshops and discussions. The course is designed for music therapists with basic IT skills. Participants can book any combination of the three days.

1. Audio and Video Recording Techniques
21 February 2008

This workshop will focus on using audio/video recording and editing technology including converting audio sessions from tape/minidisk onto CD. Software will be introduced to show how audio and video can be edited and used in presentations, CDs and short movies. Free audio editing software will be provided.

2. Using music software and pop music in clinical work
4 April 2008

This study day will focus on music software applications and pop music. Workshops will include multi-track recording, making Dance music, and making CDs. The day will be experiential and creative and will give therapists an opportunity to learn how to use the software themselves.

3. Using Music Technology equipment in clinical work
29 May 2008

This workshop will focus on using music technology in music therapy clinical work, including current DJ technology, MIDI instruments, MIDIcreator and other equipment. You will be shown how to set up and use equipment. Please bring any music technology equipment you have for experiential music making.

Musical Resources for Music Therapy

Course Leaders: Rachel Verney and Donald Wetherick

Clinical improvisation is an endlessly fascinating field where we never stop learning as music therapists. It is also a vulnerable skill, easily drained or blunted by the demands of continuing clinical work. Whether you feel eager to develop your skills further, or feel in need of refreshment, these workshops aim to help you carry on the work of musical self-development for music therapy work.

Level 1
22 July 2008

This workshop aims to develop advanced improvisation skills for music therapy clinicians through analysis of audio recordings, and to refine musical and clinical skills by focusing on the musical experience of the client in improvising. It is aimed at recently qualified clinicians and is relevant to both individual and group work. The workshop will include work at piano and using other instruments, and participants are invited to bring any instruments they use in their work.

Level 2
29 July 2008

For music therapists who have attended a Level 1 workshop before, or who have 5 or more years experience, this workshop offers a forum to continue developing clinical improvisation skills through sharing audio/video material and workshopping improvisational approaches. The content of the day will be shaped around participants interests and needs.

Returning to Practice/EU Registration
Course Leaders: Various tutors

This course prepares music therapists who trained abroad or are returning to practice after a career break to meet HPC requirements for registration in the UK. You will have a personal mentor and the course can also offer clinical placements (where available), clinical supervision, music skills teaching and/or theoretical study. This course does not replace the statutory HPC Registration Assessment process but can assist you in planning and carrying through your own process of learning in order to meet statutory requirements and to further your own development as a music therapist. The course may be arranged on an individual basis at any time.
