IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

Masters-level Training in Music Therapy at Nordoff Robbins

MAJOR DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
2010-11

  • Nordoff Robbins is the UK market leader in music therapy training.
  • We aim to ensure that our programmes are as up-to-date and as accessible as possible to all potential music therapists, and to this end we revise them occasionally.
  • We are currently revising our Masters training programmes in London and Manchester with the aim of producing an exciting and innovative new single programme available to more people from September 2011. This will be delivered simultaneously in London and Manchester.
  • To facilitate this, there will be no intake on the London MMT programme in September 2010, or on the Manchester programme until September 2011.
  • Please keep in touch with the latest developments through the Nordoff Robbins website, or contact the Education Department.

Reviewing our programmes from time to time ensures that they remain responsive to the needs of students for a flexible but comprehensive training, and that they are finely attuned to the demands of the changing professional contexts within music therapists work. In this way we have consistently ensured that our students are best placed to gain employment and to develop new work opportunities upon graduating.

As part of our commitment to remaining the market leader in music therapy education in the UK, in November 2009 City University approved our plan to make a ‘major change’ to our Masters education programmes in London and Manchester. We are pleased to announce the development of a brand-new single programme for Nordoff Robbins that will provide a rigorous and contemporary approach to training as a music therapist, building on the acknowledged quality and heritage of Nordoff Robbins education.

The revised programme will run concurrently in both London in Manchester, so as to give best access to students in all parts of the UK. Although the programme will be classed as a two-year full-time training, the delivery pattern will allow students to pursue some work and other commitments at the same time.

To allow us to prepare for this fully, we have decided not to have a new intake of students in September 2010. This year will enable us to align the intakes in London and Manchester and to ensure that the new programme is ready for launching in September 2011.

In the meantime, we will keep the descriptions of the current two Masters programmes on the website for you to consult. These will give you an idea of the basic approach we take to training music therapists, and many of the core components that will be incorporated in the new training programme.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE TWO PROGRAMMES WILL NO LONGER BE AVAILABLE FOR APPLICATION IN THEIR CURRENT FORMATS.

We are very sorry if your plans to train with us during the next year are frustrated by this new information. We urge you to bear with us during this transitional time: the reason for this transition is to make what is already an excellent training even more uniquely relevant to the rapidly changing contemporary music scene, and to make it more accessible to musicians with relevant experience. We realise that this will be a major disappointment to some people: if this includes you, please do not hesitate to contact us. We will be very happy to meet with you (or talk with you on the phone) in order to think with you about how you can use the intervening time to prepare for our auditioning process. The good news is that we hope to have more places on the revised programme than we currently do - so we hope that we will have to turn fewer people away in the future.

Please keep in touch with us. We will post all new information on the Nordoff Robbins website, and will be arranging ‘taster’ events to present our new programme during September 2010. We will endeavour to keep you personally up to date with how you can apply for the new training. If you are not already on our mailing list, please contact gemma.fleet@nordoff-robbins.org.uk or phone Gemma on 020 7267 4496.
