  • JLS doing it for the kids

JLS at Nordoff RobbinsChart-toppers JLS are used to entertaining hordes of adoring fans. But this very special crowd moved the boys like never before. Faced with a roomful of children bravely battling disability, the X Factor runners-up – Marvin Humes, 25, Oritse Williams, 23, JB Gill, 23, and Aston Merrygold, 22 – realised just how truly lucky they are.

And suddenly their fame, success and money seemed unimportant.

JB says: “Having a No.1 single or sell-out tour doesn’t compare to making these children smile. That is priceless.

“There’s no substitute for putting a smile on someone’s face.”

To find out how you can support the life-transforming work of Nordoff Robbins please drop us a line.

After scooping a top prize at the Nordoff Robbins O2 Silver Clef awards on Friday, the kind-hearted lads were determined to give something back.

So they paid a visit to a Nordoff Robbins centre in north London to see the work the charity does in using music to help improve the lives of sick and disabled kids.

The day was even more poignant for Oritse, who became his family’s main breadwinner after his mum Sonia was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when he was a teenager.

He acted as her primary carer and then selflessly took it one step further by working with youngsters suffering illness and disabilities.

“I wanted to do a job that was fulfilling and rewarding,” he says. “Some of the kids were not easy. They’d have a fit or be aggressive. But I promised the parents I’d never give up. I was determined to help them. I’d sit with them and help them be educated.
“One of the hardest things about JLS going into The X Factor was I didn’t want to come out of their lives.

“But I’ve kept in touch with many of them and their parents and send them JLS merchandise. Their parents tell me about them enjoying watching me on TV.”
JB also has a deep understanding of what these kids go through as his aunt works with youngsters who have special needs.

Many of them receive therapy from Nordoff Robbins.

He says: “It’s important not to create distance and to treat those children as if they didn’t have special needs.

“It can be difficult to do as some of the cases I’ve seen are very distressing. It’s a very demanding job. I tell Oritse all the time how impressed I am that he was a carer.”
Nordoff Robbins is the largest charity in the UK which specialises in music therapy for people of all ages.

It was founded 50 years ago by British educationalist Clive Robbins and American pianist and composer Paul Nordoff.

The annual luncheon has raised more than £7.5million by auctioning memora- bilia and encouraging rich and famous guests to dig deep into their pockets.

And after the glamour and glitz of Friday’s industry awards ceremony, where they won a top newcomer prize, JLS were just as at home sitting down and singing with the group of thrilled children.

Oritse reveals: “We sang and sat in a circle with the children and passed round an instrument which made the sound of the sea.

“We played rhythm games, tapping our thighs, which gave them something to concentrate on. No matter who you are, we all communicate through music.”
Meeting two siblings, who are part of the only set of autistic triplets in the world, melted Oritse’s heart. He says: “They were the most distracted at first but then they were really into it.

“Anything we can do to help a charity, be it recording a single or holding a concert to raise awareness, is so important to us. I hope people take time out now to check out Nordoff Robbins and donate what they can.”

  • Muse honoured at O2 Silver Clef Awards

Muse at the O2 Silver Clef Awards 2010The 35th Nordoff Robbins star-studded O2 Silver Clef Awards on Friday 2nd July was a huge success again this year, filling The Hilton, Park Lane with multi award-winning superstars from Muse to Tony Bennett!

The glamorous ceremony was hosted by the fabulous Sharon Osborne, who said “Nordoff Robbins is one of my favourite charities.”

We would like to congratulate all the award winners on their fantastic achievements and thank them for their support of Nordoff Robbins.

On winning the coveted O2 Silver Clef Award Muse commented, “We are delighted to be presented this year’s Nordoff Robbins Silver Clef and join the ranks of such artistes as Robert Plant, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Elton John and The Who.

“Nordoff Robbins is an exceptional charity that has a positive impact on so many people’s lives, and we are very proud to be recognised by them in this way.”

The award was presented to Muse by Roger Taylor and Brian May of Queen who together described the Warner-signed trio as “probably the greatest live act in the world today”…“this is a magnificent, incredible group.”

Muse also proved to be generous guests, successfully bidding tens of thousands during the auction in aid of Nordoff Robbins and donating what turned out to be the most expensive item in the auction, a signed custom-made Manson guitar which Matthew Bellamy signed on the stage.

Tony Bennett proudly received the Sony Ericsson Lifetime Achievement Award. In an introductory video message from director Martin Scorsese he described the 83-year-old singer as “incomparable.” To which Bennett told the audience, “It’s not what you get, it’s what you give that makes your life a treasure”.

“I feel I’ve joined a very special club,” Bennett said of his honour.  “I am a great believer that music can be a powerful healing force and I applaud all the fantastic work that Nordoff Robbins has implemented over the past 50 years.”

At 93, Dame Vera Lynn makes Bennett look like a newcomer. The WWII “Forces’ Sweetheart” became the oldest artist to score a No. 1 album, when her greatest hits “We’ll Meet Again: The Very Best of Vera Lynn” hit the top of the UK chart in September last year.

Dame Vera collected the Investec Icon Award from ’60s pop singer and TV presenter Cilla Black, and she happily joined in with an impromptu crowd sing-along of “We’ll Meet Again.”

“It’s lovely having this award 60 years on,” said Dame Vera. “It was 60 years ago that I made that record.”

Ronnie Wood presented the Hard Rock Ambassador of Rock Award to Slash, who said it was a “big honour” to receive an award connected to Nordoff Robbins. “I’m a big believer in the power that music has to heal, so this is really important,” he said.

English tenor Russell Watson won the PPL Classical Award; pop-rock act Scouting For Girls won the Royal Albert Hall Best British Band Award; and Kelis picked up the Raymond Weil International Award.

Dizzee Rascal was unable to collect his American Express Digital Innovation Award, but sent a video message to which Sharon Osbourne commented: “I thought my old man [Ozzy Osbourne] was hard to understand, I couldn’t understand one bloody word.”

Now in its impressive 35th year, the O2 Silver Clef Awards is always a highlight in the music social calendar and this year the event raised over £400,000 for Nordoff Robbins.

We would also like to thank all the sponsors once again for their wonderful support.

  • Announcing the Nordoff Robbins 35th 02 Silver Clef Lunch

The Nordoff Robbins annual star-studded 02 Silver Clef Awards is set to rock The Hilton, Park Lane as multi-platinum, multi award-winning Devon rock act Muse will be awarded the coveted 02 Silver Clef Award.  This year’s 35th infamous awards luncheon held to raise money for Nordoff Robbins will be hosted by British music mogul Sharon Osbourne. The event will take place on Friday 2nd July and will be attended by guests including the music industry’s high fliers, artists, celebrities and supporters of Nordoff Robbins.

    Update!
We are proud to announce that Scouting For Girls, JLS, Tony Bennett, Russell Watson and Dizzee Rascal will also be accepting awards on the day, and there are still more awards winners and attendees to be announced.

Relentless, innovative and creatively uncompromising, Muse has garnered extraordinary critical praise and built a fanatically loyal international fan following. Their latest and fifth studio album “The Resistance ” has been called “Astonishing … the UK rock record of the year,” by NME, while Q raved, “For sheer bravado and imagination Absolution is something that few bands will top”.

The band are currently busy touring the US, and are set to headline at both world-famous American Coachella festival in April, and then Glastonbury in June, but will not miss the opportunity to pick up their coveted award at this year’s Silver Clef Awards.

Muse said “We are delighted to be presented this year’s Nordoff Robbins Silver Clef and join the ranks of such Artistes as Robert Plant, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Elton John & The Who. Nordoff Robbins is an exceptional charity that has a positive impact on so many people’s lives, and we are very proud to be recognised by them in this way”

The irrepressible Sharon Osbourne will be the hostess at this year’s inaugural show held at London’s Hilton. The music manager, celebrity and wife of singer-songwriter Ozzy Osbourne  is delighted to be keeping this years show in order.

Sharon said “Nordoff Robbins is one of my favourite charities, I look forward to what’s looking like a fabulous day.”

Sharon came into public prominence after appearing in MTV show The Osbournes. She later became a judge on the talent shows The X  Factor and America’s Got Talent.  Her autobiography, Extreme, has sold in excess of two million copies.

It seemed the perfect fit for Sharon to present the awards given her own success in the industry. She formed her own international company, Sharon Osbourne Management, created two record labels, became a concert tour producer, film producer, five-days-a-week talk show host and started a charity, all at the same time as nurturing her family.

With an impressive roll call of previous Award winners and industry favorites, including Take That, Oasis, Paul Weller and Coldplay, this year’s event will be no exception and will feature winners of the highest talents and caliber.  Now in its impressive 35th year, the 02 Silver Clef Awards Lunch is a highlight in the music social calendar..  The event, which has so far raised over £7.5million for Nordoff Robbins, also features an auction of one-off music memorabilia items and other money-can’t-buy items.

  • Sir Tom Jones Is Honoured With The 2010 Industry Trusts’ Award

Sir Tom Jones, legend, national treasure, international superstar is to be honoured with the prestigious Music Industry Trusts’ Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to music.  Sir Tom, knighted by the Queen in 2006 and celebrating his 70th Birthday this year, has notched up a stellar career over five decades and continues to scale the very highest peaks of the music business, both in the UK and around the world.   The Award will be presented to Tom Jones on 1 November at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel.  Over 1000 guests attend this celebrated charity award event in aid of Nordoff Robbins and the BRIT Trust.

David Munns, Chairman of the Award committee said:  “Tom Jones is one of those rare beings, a timeless entertainer, a great guy, who clearly loves what he does, and whose talent appeals to successive generations.  Tom is Mr Cool, one of the world’s greatest singers and performers and we are extremely proud and honoured that he is the 2010 recipient of the Music Industry Trusts’ Award.”

Tom Jones was born in the Welsh mining village of Pontypridd and began singing at a very early age; his professional career began in 1963 with a Welsh beat group called Tommy Scott and the Senators. The following year Tom recorded several solo tracks with producer Joe Meek, then eventually went on to land a record contract with Decca.  His second single, ‘It’s Not Unusual’, went stratospheric and became a massive international hit, reaching Number 1 in the UK and top 10 in the US.  This was followed in 1965, with the recording of two movie themes, ‘What’s New Pussycat?’ and the James Bond film ‘Thunderball’.  Tom won that year’s Grammy Award for Best New Artist: he was clearly on his way and America had taken him to their hearts.

Like many great artists, Tom Jones relishes new musical challenges, and in 1988 recorded Prince’s ‘Kiss’ with the Art of Noise which became an international hit, receiving heavy rotation on MTV and earning Tom a VMA for Breakthrouh Artist. The hugely successful ‘Reload’, an album of unexpected collaborations, came at the age of 59, selling 5 million copies worldwide. With his 70th birthday approaching and with over 100 million record sales, Tom remains indefatigable, with both recording and touring his live show around the globe. His next highly anticipated project is due from Island Records/Universal in July, where he once again excels himself with stirring performances that surprise and  inspire. As the man said himself: “The fire is still in me. I am still, and I want to be, a contender.”

©Dean Fardell - Tom Jones performing at the Nordoff Robbins O2 Rockwell concert in 2009

The Music Industry Trusts’ Award, now in its 19th year, has earned its respected place in the entertainment industry due to the great names that have held this honour: Sir George Martin, Ahmet Ertegun, Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin, John Barry, Michael Parkinson, Lord Andrew Lloyd Weber and Kylie Minogue.  The Award was founded to recognise outstanding achievement in the UK music industry as well as benefiting Nordoff Robbins and the BRIT Trust.

    Tom Jones commented:

“2010 is shaping up to be a very memorable year for me, I’m delighted to be honoured with the Music Industry Trusts’ Award and to join the roll-call of some great past honourees, such as George and Ahmet. I’ve visited the Brit Performing Arts & Technology School, supported by the BRIT TRUST, one of the Award’s charities, and was blown away by the incredible talent there and I’m looking forward to finding out more about Nordoff Robbins’ great work.”

The Music Industry Trusts’ Award has raised £3.7 million to date for its two charities, Nordoff Robbins and the BRIT Trust (which includes the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology).  The Award is unique because it recognises the contribution that an individual has made to the industry across a range of activities: record producer, film music composer, broadcaster, legendary artist, record executive, songwriter and concert impresario. The Award evening has become renowned for its magic moments, with unique live performances that have a special resonance for the recipient.

  • Football Extravaganza 2010 a huge success!

On Monday 12th April, the 15th Anniversary Football Extravaganza kicked-off with one of footballs most celebrated Frenchmen, Eric Cantona, lining up with some of his former team-mates to receive the prestigious Legend of Football Award, and raise a target of £300,000 for Nordoff Robbins.

The capacity crowd arrived at The Park Lane Hilton to be welcomed by our host, Richard Keys, who introduced Eric and his Top Table of team-mates Ryan Giggs, Steve Bruce and Peter Schmeichel, along with Man Utd superstar fan Mick Hucknall, Director of ‘Looking For Eric’, Ken Loach and of course, Erics former boss and previous FE Award Recipient, Sir Alex Ferguson.

Sir Alex added: “The entire Football Extravaganza event reflects football’s contribution to a fantastic charity. It really is an inspiration, and owes much to the energy of Alan Curbishley, who got it started, and his brother Bill, who brings the musical connection through being manager of The Who.

“Over the years most managers have got on board and it is just getting bigger and bigger and has become a really tremendous event”

As the auction, hosted by Geoff Shreeves and Nick Stewart took place, Andy Gray got the ball rolling bidding for VIP tickets to see U2 in Paris– whilst many of the footballers present donated further money with eager enthusiasm.  A special Manchester United Magnificent 7 collection of signed shirts reached a staggering £45,000, and a one-off painting by renowned artist Sacha Jafri raised £85,000.

Surely though, the auction prize causing the biggest stir, was The Art of Football, a unique collection of self-portraits by Barclays Premier League players and managers which sold for £32,000. The book, organised and donated by The Premier League, had its final two pages filled on the night by Monsieur Cantona and Sir Alex.  Sir Alex said: “The book is a fantastic idea. I don’t think anyone expects it to give young kids any inspiration to be artists but it certainly provides a talking point with all those great names in it.” .

The night raised a staggering £410,000 for Nordoff Robbins– which took the fund-raising from The Football Extravaganza to over £5million in its 15 years.  This huge success is thanks in no small part to all the guests who loyally arrive each year to pay tribute to the beautiful game, and to all the football fraternity who continuously lend their support to this fantastic event.

Over the years, FE Award recipients have included Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Bobby Robson, Sir Bobby, Sir Alex Ferguson, Tony Adams, Sir Bobby Charlton, Brian Clough, Kenny Dalglish, Denis Law, Teddy Sheringham and Alan Shearer.

The FE organising committee would like to thank all the footballers, sponsors and guests who have made The FE the most successful annual football charity event.  We very much look forward to another outstanding year of football and fund-raising next season.

  • Charity record puts young musicians in the spotlight

A leading songwriter who has worked with Amy Winehouse, Sugababes and Beverley Knight has selected young musicians from a Brighton music college to get their first album deal.

The talented performers are studying at leading ‘rock and roll’ college Brighton Institute of Modern Music (BIMM Brighton) and had to pass a tough audition process in order to appear on the college’s acclaimed annual compilation album.

Felix Howard, Head of A&R at EMI Music Publishing, and himself a successful songwriter, was on the panel of judges in charge of selecting the lucky BIMM students, now named as ‘the ones to watch’ on the UK music scene in the next few years.

Entitled ‘What’s inside your head? Volume three’, the album is the eighth in the college’s history, with all proceeds donated to charity.  There are 14 tracks, all written and performed by the young artists, including popular Brighton acts such as James Bay and Violet Society.

The students have also been involved in the back stage preparation of making the album with leading people from the music industry.  They have learnt how to prepare and record their tracks in the studio, to be fully involved in the production process from beginning to end, and gain invaluable experience at this early stage of their careers.

The album was officially launched at the Pavilion Theatre on Friday 14 May as part of Brighton’s Great Escape – one of the largest festivals in Europe.  Some of the album’s contributors performed their tracks and were listened to by an audience which included talent scouts and A& R professionals.

Kathryn Craddock, Head of Creative and Music Industry at BIMM, said: “This is an incredible opportunity for our students.  Our ethos at BIMM has always been to empower young artists to give them the best possible break into the music industry.  Putting an album together from scratch gives them unrivalled experience when starting out and a great start to their careers.”

‘What’s inside your head? Volume three’ will be released on South Coast Sounds (www.south-coast-sounds.co.uk) – a unique label set up to help the development of young new artists.  The CD is priced at £5 and is available to purchase from www.bimm.co.uk or as a download from iTunes (www.itunes.com) for £7.99.  Proceeds will go to Nordoff Robbins.

All previous BIMM albums are available to download from iTunes and feature several artists who have gone on to secure major recording deals, such as Brit-nominee singer-songwriter Beth Rowley, The Kooks (who have sold over 2 million records to date), Kate Walsh (the first ever unsigned artist to go to No.1 on iTunes) and Elliot Andrews of the Kate Nash band.

The college also runs the annual August BIMM summer schools which are four-day intensive training sessions and is currently taking bookings. For more information, visit www.bimm.co.uk or contact 0844 2 646 666.

  • The Art of Football

On an evening when the Football Extravaganza celebrates Eric Cantona, one of the Premier League’s greatest ever artists on the football pitch, it seems appropriate that one of the star attractions in the Football Extravaganza’s auction on 12th April is a unique collection of self-portraits by the current stars of the Barclays Premier League.

    i-bidder.com

NOTE: THIS AUCTION IS NOW CLOSED

The Art of Football is the brainchild of ‘Premier League World’ producer Pete Spring. ‘Premier League World’ is one of the Premier League’s three weekly magazine shows that are broadcast across 211 countries.

Some of the biggest names in English and world football have put marker to paper and it quickly became apparent that a unique and extremely valuable piece of football memorabilia had been created. The Premier League decided to donate The Art of Football to Nordoff Robbins so that they could raise vital funds for music therapy.

The Art of Football is a fantastic and rare insight of the 2009/10 Barclays Premier League season. Players and managers have proved good sports in adding their distinctive addition to the tome. The very first name and picture in the book is Jason Roberts of Blackburn Rovers, and the final one will be Eric Cantona, along with his former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, added shortly before the book is auctioned on 12th April.

    i-bidder.com

Another famous United player, and former team-mate of Eric’s, featuring in the book is Ryan Giggs. The Welshman contributed shortly after he became the first player to have scored in every Premier League season. Another notable addition from Old Trafford is Wayne Rooney. Currently the greatest artist gracing Premier League pitches, he has also provided arguably the most memorable drawing of the book.

Every Premier League Club has at least one player or manager featured and over 50 stars names from over 20 different countries have contributed. They include players expected to light up in the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ in South Africa such as Cesc Fabregas, Didier Drogba and Robin van Persie; England stars like Steven Gerrard, David James and Theo Walcott; and several high profile managers in Carlo Ancelotti, Rafa Benitez, and Harry Redknapp; the latter of course being a previous recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Football Extravaganza.

Artists all of them; they and you will help create a little piece of football history at the Football Extravaganza on April 12th in aid of Nordoff Robbins.
