Nordoff Robbins annual international summer school for music therapists will now be held online for the second year in succession.

Course Details

For many years, we have been holding a Summer School at our London Centre. The aim of our Summer School is to bring together working music therapists from around the world who wish to learn about the Nordoff Robbins approach. This way they can take some aspects of the Nordoff Robbins approach away with them and integrate it into their work.

Due to the impact of COVID-19 on international travel, we will once again be running our Summer School online in 2021.

In 2020 we found that bringing it online enabled people to participate for whom the costs of travelling to London and finding accommodation for a week might otherwise have been a barrier.

What does the Summer School include?

The Summer School will include:

  • Practical workshops in musical techniques and awareness
  • Sharing and discussion of participants’ own music therapy work (for which participants will need to bring recent recordings of their work)
  • Seminars discussing current developments in Nordoff Robbins music therapy and principles underlying the approach
  • Input on monitoring and evaluation techniques

All with a strong emphasis on practical music-making.

What do I need to participate?

If you’re a trained music therapist anywhere in the world (including the UK), you are welcome to join us for four days of learning, sharing and experiencing. You don’t need to have done any training in the Nordoff Robbins approach, but you should have a lively interest in musical intention, action and thinking within music therapy. You should also be open to sharing recordings of your work with others and prepared to “have a go” in workshops.

What we will offer you

We will offer you opportunities to experience something of the Nordoff Robbins approach to supervision in relation to your own work. We will try to work with you on extending the range of your own music-making skills, and we will provide information for you about what we do and how we do it, including input on working online during the Covid-19 pandemic.

We always aim for a supportive atmosphere which can be responsive to each person’s needs and interests, both during this week and beyond.

If you have any questions about the Summer School online please email We look forward to welcoming you

PLEASE NOTE that this is NOT a training programme: it is intended as a useful CPD experience for already qualified music therapists. It does not confer any eligibility to work as a music therapist or any status as a Nordoff Robbins music therapist.

Monday 19th – Thursday 22nd July

10.00 – 16.30 (BST) each day

We will allow ample time for breaks to ensure we avoid “Zoom fatigue”.

We will be working online using Zoom software, which is free to use. We will send you details of how to configure this best for the musical work we will be doing.
