Ellie’s story
Music therapy offers a welcoming and engaging space for Ellie
Ellie is 22 years old and lives in a supported accommodation for adults with learning disabilities. She can find it difficult to interact with others and can struggle to maintain her interest during activities. Ellie also has a physical disability that requires her to use a wheelchair, and this limits the opportunities for her to take part in activities she enjoys.
However, during her weekly sessions with music therapist Michael, Ellie flourishes.
Ellie’s playful and energetic personality means she thrives during sessions that balance flexibility with musical structure. This often involves singing improvisations while Michael accompanies with rhythmic guitar playing. To match Ellie’s energy, Michael plays lively grooves on the guitar, which can help to motivate her during sessions.
Watch Ellie and her music therapist improvise together during a music therapy session
In the video, Ellie and her music therapist Michael keep the lyrics and melody simple while singing together. This simplicity allows Ellie to express herself through her voice. Michael responds to her through the music, creating a supportive space where Ellie feels heard and can stay engaged.
Importantly, Ellie has fun during music therapy, often smiling and moving her body to the music. Staff at her accommodation have noticed how much she enjoys her sessions, with the manager at her home saying:
The fact that Ellie is able to focus for as long as she does in these sessions is a miracle. She is really engaged and clearly gets a lot out of music therapy.
