Sight Scotland
Music is the universal language that all children can speak and respond to. It is a language that requires no words and can reach even the hardest to reach
Sight Scotland
Sight Scotland has a mission to reach everyone in Scotland with sight loss by offering support and advice, campaigning for equal rights and funding medical research. The charity provides learning, care and accessible formats in support of blind and partially sighted people.
Our partnership with Sight Scotland has been running for over 10 years at its school, The Royal Blind School. In music therapy, pupils with a range of needs have the opportunity to take the lead and make positive choices. In doing so, they can develop their sense of self through musical expression. This reaches beyond just the music therapy sessions for the young people at the school. Building confidence in their abilities and capacity to impact the world around them extends into the classroom and home environments.
We can see the power of music through the young people’s level of anticipation and engagement with music therapy sessions. They understand and enjoy the sense of purpose, interaction and musicality that comes with each session.
The team at the school tell us: “Our partnership with Nordoff and Robbins has been invaluable to the young people we support, our staff and our families. We see the young people express choice and find their voice for enjoyment and fun.”
Nordoff and Robbins is understanding of the needs of the people we support and can adapt and respond with care and compassion.
We produced this story in partnership with Sight Scotland.
