6. Language requirements
It is important for music therapists to be able to communicate clearly and effectively with people who use music therapy services, as well as with carers, colleagues, funders, service managers, and the many other people across health, social care, education and community services with whom they may come into contact. In addition, since this is a Masters-level training, students are required to read extensively and to discuss, debate and explore concepts in both spoken and written form. This degree of critical thinking therefore requires a good standard of English, both receptively (reading and listening) and productively (speaking and writing). If you are invited to an individual audition/interview, we will ask you to complete a short written task immediately afterwards. This is not intended to test your knowledge of music therapy, but simply your ability to write coherently in English.
What is your level of qualification in English?
*
A first degree taught in English within an English speaking country (e.g. UK, Republic of Ireland, USA, Australia, Canada)
Any UK Examining Body – GCE 'O' Level or GCSE in English Language or English Literature – Grade C or Above
Cambridge ESOL – Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) – Grade C or Above
International English Language Testing System – IELTS Academic Test – Overall Score of 7.0 with no element below 6.5
Test of English as a Foreign Language – TOEFL Paper Test – 620
Test of English as a Foreign Language – TOEFL Computer Test – 260
Other
All applicants must demonstrate that their English is of a standard which will enable them to satisfy the demands of the programme (and hence ultimately to meet the requirements of the Health and Care Professions Council). Please indicate which of the following English language qualifications you have ALREADY successfully achieved:
Other (please give details) – we will contact you for further information if necessary
Applicants invited to attend an individual audition should bring evidence of this qualification with them.
7. Your health
As registered health professionals, music therapists are required to demonstrate to the Health and Care Professions Council that their health is not an obstacle to safe and effective practice. This does not mean that any particular health condition necessarily bars you from training, but does make it necessary for you to demonstrate that you are able to manage your health effectively. We encourage applications from people who consider themselves to have a disability and aim to offer appropriate support to enable all students to achieve the learning outcomes of the programme. We therefore ask applicants to disclose relevant information here so that we can think collaboratively with them at interview about how best we might be able to support them during the programme. For more information, the document ‘Health, disability and becoming a health and care professional’ (2015) can be downloaded from the Health and Care Professions Council website
Do you consider yourself to have a disability?
*

No
If yes, please provide details below and tell us what support you may need to enable you to meet the learning outcomes of the programme.
Do you consider yourself to have any particular learning support needs (for example those resulting from dyslexia, dyspraxia etc.)?
*

No
If yes, please provide details below and tell us what support you may need to enable you to meet the learning outcomes of the programme.
Please comment on the state of your physical and mental health and your ability to manage any conditions:
*
All applicants are required to submit a medical report from their doctor. Please remember to download the accompanying doctor’s medical report form (at the end of this form). You will need to ask your doctor to complete this, and either send it to us yourself or you can ask your doctor to send it. Please note that some doctors charge for this service.
8. Working with vulnerable people
As registered health professionals, music therapists work with vulnerable members of society and any offer of a place on this programme will be subject to an enhanced DBS check.

10. Declaration
I declare that to the best of my knowledge and belief, all particulars I have given are complete and true. I understand that any false declaration or misleading statement or any significant omission may result in the withdrawal of any offer of a place on the programme or the termination of my training. I understand that any place is subject to satisfactory personal, professional and medical references. I give consent for Nordoff Robbins to hold the information I have provided securely for six months in order to process my application, and my contact details for up to 5 years. I understand that if I accept the offer of a place on the programme, then the information I have provided will be transferred to my student record.

11. Submitting your video recordings
To help us assess your musicianship and level of playing, we ask you to submit video recordings of your playing and singing. The recordings will be used in conjunction with your completed application form to allow the panel to make an informed decision as to who to invite to the audition / interview stage.
Format of recordings
You will need to record and upload these videos to YouTube / Vimeo or another video sharing platform. We request that these are password protected to insure privacy. If you having difficulty with this please contact
[email protected]
Please make sure that any videos uploaded to YouTube are set to ‘Unlisted’ in the visibility settings – this means only people with the URL link can find the video. Please do not set any YouTube videos to ‘Private’ as we will be unable to view them.
Purpose of recording
Music therapy is “musician-ly” work. We need to assess both your skill level and the breadth of your musicianship. The choice of styles and repertoire is entirely up to you, but remember that we are looking for flexible musicians. People who come to music therapy sessions have varied tastes, experiences and cultural identities: we need to be able to support people whoever they are. So we suggest that you show us the range of your musicianship.
What should be in view
During the recording we need to be able to see your hands and your face (your face can be in profile if you are playing an instrument that prohibits seeing both from the front simultaneously)
Content of recordings
Please include the following (maximum 5 minutes per piece): Two contrasting pieces on your first instrument AND one song, which you sing whilst accompanying yourself on a harmony instrument (guitar / piano / accordion etc). This song must be done WITHOUT sheet music, although you may play from chord symbols and you may have the lyrics written out, provided this can be clearly seen at some point on the video recording (without editing). AND one piece on another instrument (if you have one) At least one of your pieces should be a non-accompanying solo on a harmonic instrument – piano, guitar, accordion etc. Pieces should NOT be examples of therapy-style work or derived from work with people. We will examine your capacity for this type of work in later parts of the audition process.

Information about the application process
How will my application be assessed?
A panel of tutors looks at ALL complete applications, including the video footage supplied by applicants. They then rank applications based on their perceptions of: evidence of musical readiness for the training, evidence of academic readiness for the training, evidence of relevant experience which has informed your decision to apply, evidence of knowledge and understanding of the Nordoff Robbins approach to music therapy.
Individual audition / interview
At the individual audition / interview you will be asked: to play your pieces to accompany yourself (again, this needs to be without using sheet music, but you may bring the chord symbols and / or the lyrics) to undertake various musical tasks, including improvising with us to discuss your application to provide the evidence (the original and a photocopy) of your English Language qualification You MAY play / sing the same pieces that you submitted recordings of as part of your application if you wish to do so. We deliberately don’t tell you in more detail what will be required of you within the audition because we want to see how you cope with the unexpected. We also want to find out what it feels like to improvise with you. The music-making audition will be followed by an interview, when the panel will discuss your application with you. We strongly recommend that you prepare for this by reading around music therapy, and in particular the Nordoff Robbins approach to music therapy, and being ready to talk about any relevant experience you may have. We expect you to be able to think with us about whether this particular programme would suit you, and why. After the audition/interview, you will be asked to complete a short written task. This is not intended to test your knowledge of music therapy, but simply your ability to write coherently in English. You can spend as long as you want doing this, but we would expect it to take around 30 minutes.
Group audition
If you are successful and are asked to attend the group audition, you will then be given further instructions on what to do, including preparing a task of your choice, for the group audition. As part of our commitment to diversity within the MMT programme, and within Nordoff and Robbins more generally, we ask students at the point of registration to complete this diversity monitoring form.
The information you supply will NOT be associated with your student record. Instead, we simply combine the numbers into an annual return to our validation partner – Goldsmiths, University of London. This return enables us to monitor the levels of diversity within our cohorts over time. Programme staff and students will see the annual return but will not know who has identified themselves in any particular way. The forms will be destroyed once the return has been compiled.
However, if you feel there is anything in this form that we should know about in relation to you personally (e.g. so that we can support you better in your training), please do talk to us about this.
