Niam’s story
It’s World Down Syndrome Day on the 21 March 2025, an annual celebration which aims to help people understand and better support those with Down syndrome. To celebrate this year, we’re sharing an insight into Niam’s music therapy journey, whilst he had sessions with music therapist Connie.
Through music, Niam can explore ways of expressing himself
Niam was 10 years old when he had music therapy sessions with Connie, at his school. When he was very young, he was diagnosed with Down syndrome which affected his coordination and ability to communicate. Although he often appeared happy and easy-going, he sometimes struggled to express himself verbally and could become frustrated at this. However, he loved music, was a big fan of Bruno Mars and Justin Bieber, and enjoyed singing, rapping, and beatboxing.
When Niam first met his music therapist Connie, he would often respond with one-word answers during their conversations. Although he’d occasionally try to say more, he’d often find it hard to get the words out and would give up.
In music therapy sessions, however, Niam would often use music to express himself freely. He loved to spend sessions improvising upbeat songs in a pop or R&B style. And his enthusiasm and personality would shine through when he’d switch to higher pitched singing or begin rapping bars.
Music therapy also gave Niam the space to explore different emotions through song. During one particular session, Niam tried out a more gentle style of song at the suggestion of music therapist Connie. He started singing in a more serious tone, and this gradually transitioned into a passionate ballad. This new style of song allowed Niam to express a different range of emotions from usual. And he was able to take the lead and explore different pitches, with the support of Connie who provided accompaniment.
Music therapy has made him happy, given him even more confidence and helped with his understanding of language.
